Freakin technology
Aug 14th, 2009 by Jake

Dammit, I spend all damn day dealing with broke ass technology, and then my own website has broke assness.

Did anybody else notice that theres two jakes listed under author?

Great.

And I’ve drunk like 7 beers and it still isn’t working.

And now its gonna look like Bell wrote this post, cuz damned if I didn’t go dancing around deleting random shit in the SQL table.

Get me another beer, somebody…

My new favorite place
Aug 8th, 2009 by Bell

I’ve been there once… in Atlanta. My friend and I strolled around the showroom some, didn’t really have any house or apartment to furnish…and we left out the same door we came in.

In Charlotte this weekend, Jake and I passed an IKEA. He’s never been inside one. So, we stopped to wander around for an hour or so.

My mind was blown…he mind was blown. We trucked straight through that place and STILL ended up buying things. And going back to other sections… and SHOPPING (which wasn’t the original idea).

Anyway… I could spend LOTS of money there. If I can save money by buying furniture that I have to assemble…I’ll do it. No sweat. It’s worth it to me.

The way I see it is this… lots of furniture stores sell really expensive, high quality items. So — that means, if you buy it….you can NEVER change your mind on the furniture in your home. Or you’d feel bad about putting the VERY expensive furniture in a back bedroom — mostly because you aren’t done paying for it…. or something like that.

I’m sure modular, build-it-yourself furniture has drawbacks… but would be PERFECT for lots of things.

Such as – the boys are already planning their next bedroom designs. Ugg…

We haven’t done anything to the house since we put it on the market to sell. We haven’t bought anything. We haven’t upgraded.

So– even though it’s still on the market (for almost a year now), we decided to keep living here. We’re going to decorate. We’re going to remodel. If someone wants to see it, they will see it at whatever stage it’s at during that time.

Our den — which we remodeled last summer… still needs some lovin’. And we still don’t have the keg and tap installed in the fridge.’

We added a few IKEA items today… makes it quite awesome in here.

Rock on!
Jul 7th, 2009 by Bell

Today, the boys and I went to Knoxville (Jake had to work) and had a good day out. Ran to Earthfare and bought some yummy beer (started liking some Belgian beers while we were in Holland). Took the boys to Gamestop and picked up a new Wii game and DS game. Then, we hit  ol’ Hobby Lobby and bought some goodies. Wildcat got some ocean fish stickers for his bedroom. Dragon got some model paint to refurbish some of his toys. We got Dad a couple of frames, so he can have some for his new office. And me? I got a shadow box for Wildcat’s “Survivor” night memorabilia  and a frame to make a nice collage with some of the stuff we collected while in Europe.

I love projects.

And… I’m done with the first one.

This still tickles me beyond belief. What an awesome night for Wildcat! He still talks about it. He’s “Survivor’s biggest fan.”  (AND- he’s just as excited about meeting and having his picture with the Mayor.)

Another big, huge THANK YOU to everyone who made this happen. It will be a great memory for him forever.

Backyard Jungle
Jul 3rd, 2009 by Bell

Our backyard must have good soil.

Add the large amounts of rain that fell while we were gone…

and you get

One and a half foot tall grass (mower broke…but we’re working on it)

and…

MONSTER VEGETABLES

Our first “harvest”-

We have 5 HUGE cucumbers, 1 yellow squash, 1 banana pepper.

Now…

what to do with them…. hmmm…

Growing up so fast
May 28th, 2009 by Bell

Our little garden has exploded in the last week or so. It’s amazing really.

We’ve only had to water it twice since we planted it – since it’s been raining so much.
And we’re going to have to get some kind of something to put on the okra plants, because there is some little critter eating the leaves. They look like doilies. We spread coffee grounds around them for the time being. Heard that helps keep snails out. It doesn’t seem to be working.

Today, Wildcat and I did some needful in the garden.
He pulled “weets” while I put some posts in the ground and ran some string support lines. The tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers are a foot or taller and leaning. It was time. While stringing up the ‘maters, I noticed the cherry tomato plant has a tomato!! It’s about the size of a dime. Kinda cute. Wildcat said, “Well… the flowers turn into the fruit. Then, it’s green first. Then orange. Then, when it’s red…we can eat it.”

So we’re gonna watch and wait.

It’s exciting.

…how does your garden grow?
Apr 27th, 2009 by Bell

This weekend was beautiful and we tried to enjoy it. The yard needed mowing anyway…so we made Sunday a yard work day.

I mowed, Jake trimmed…and we started the boys pulling up grass in a section of our yard to make a vegetable garden.

20 ft x 5 ft … we all chipped in — removed all the grass, tilled up the lovely Tennessee red dirt.

Then we piled into the car (we were COVERED  in dirt) and hit the garden center (got some lunch on the way home).

Tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, okra, banana peppers, green bell peppers, cucumbers, yellow summer squash… oh, and Wildcat planted Sunflowers along another side of the fence.

We mixed a bag of soil conditioner into the garden…and planted away!

Minus the blisters and slightly pink shoulders, we all enjoyed yesterday. And hopefully we will enjoy what we created well into the summer.

The kickassness of the vintage modern stereo system
Mar 13th, 2009 by

To elaborate a bit more on what Bell was talking about the other day, we indulged in some over the top geekery.

See, we had a week off.  We needed it, for real, because the past few months have been rough.  We needed a week off, with the kids in school, where we didn’t have crap to do.

Not a damn thing.

See, thats a great idea.  The problem with that idea is that Bell and I are not really sit around people. Especially when we have unexpected surpluses in our financial situation.

Now, to be fair, that Monday we essentially slept all day.  We cleaned up the house that Tuesday, and then slept.

But by the time Friday rolled around we were getting big ol’ ideas.  We had already talked to a dude about paving our driveway, which will be king hell awesome, but we needed to do something a bit more immediate, as the driveway thing is going to take a month or two due to scheduling, and hell, a driveway doesn’t have flashy lights.

Now, anybody that knows how I roll knows I roll toward flashy lights.  I like em.  If you’ve got little chromed out buttons and (ooo) knobs, thats even better.

So, Bell and I, after watching the supreme awesomeness that was The Watchmen (and yes, I’m a longtime fan of the book, and yes, the movie ruled), got us some tasty lunch and a tasty beverage and strolled out to the electronics store.

Now, I’m married to a wonderful woman who manages to somehow geek out over this kinda crap as much as I do.  I know.  You can’t believe it, but Jack, believe it, so after about 5 hours of hemming and hawing Bell and I managed to leave a variety of stores with a new turntable, a new receiver, a new set of speakers, and a much lighter wallet.

So, the next morning we set to the task of removing my 7 or 8 year old Kenwood speakers from the corners of the living room and replacing them with the new badass Polk ones, while trying to figure out where we were going to put these things, and our mind drifted simultaneously to the RCA VLT29-L.

Remember VLT29-L?

Looks like a table, all stately and crap

Yeah, I had high hopes for that guy.   I had dreams of getting it fixed up, and spent some hours on it (despite the internet’s indifference to it), but ended up troubleshooting everything down to a jack

ed up balance potentiometer and then giving up on it.  I was playing with the idea of running speaker wires out to it from the main receiver in the den, and just using the speakers for the living room sound, but was never really crazy about that idea.

We had a new idea now.  An idea that was near blasphemy to the Jack Palancy badassness of VLT29-L, but yet, an idea that would revitalize it.  An idea that would personalize it.  An idea that would invigorate it, and quite possibly change the world.

We were going to put all of our new crap in it.

And so, Saturday,  on the eve’s eve of our mighty vacation ending, my wife and I had found… a project.

Hell yes we had.

So, we started by pulling all of the guts out of the inside.  All of that sweet, solid state, radioey goodness, gone, gone, gone.

The guts

But damn, thats how you do progress.  And it didn’t work anyway, so…

Next step was figuring how how to fit the new stuff in the cabinet.  We wanted to maybe craft a door to keep the front paneling intact, but that meant we couldn’t use remote controls without going through some trouble, and lets face it, we’re 30 something Americans, we’ve been using remote controls all of our lives.  Hell, I don’t know that the kids are aware that these things function without remote controls.

We decided to remove the front and proceed with the rest of the project, but then we discovered that the front of the thing is really just a big ass piece of plastic anyway.

No front

Hmm.

So,  we went ahead and cut the whole front of it off so all the new coolness is visible from the front.

That done, we had to figure out the shelves, and what to do with them.

Shelves from the back

After a trip to the hardware store to buy a jigsaw and purchase some molding that would cover the rough edges of the front (and ended up failing miserably at that), we cut out the sections we needed.  By now, good ol’ James had stopped by to join the fun and sleep on our couch, and provide general moral support while trying not to drink our beer.

The assembly process began, and after a few jigsawian adjustments, we had the stuff in there.

img_5048

Bell did an awesome job of upholstering the thing with some nice velvet bought at Joannes, and I also picked up the mixer seen at bottom right because, ahem, I forgot that a record player is going to need some sort of a pre-amp, and since we weren’t buying something a little more quality minded that the Audio Technica I had before, it ain’t gonna be built in.

We also had a delicious meal and fine, fine beer at Smokey Mountain Brewery (where, it has been decided, the inaugural keg of the mighty Bennu kegerator will be purchased, at a time to be determined).

Came back home, and went to town setting everything up.  I’m not going to go into the sordid details of how I plugged things in wrong and spent hours trying to troubleshoot it, or how I had to run back out to get different wires or jury rig some crap solution to a problem I should have forseen, because that kind of stuff isn’t important.

No.

This is whats important.

Freakin Awesome

That this monster looks freakin awesome, and sounds even better.

Our stereo can totally beat up your stereo.

The pirates are here!!

Wildcat's Pirate Room

Wildcat’s bedroom “FINaallly” got its make-over. He loves it.

We still have a few accessories to find and some window treatments to hang (complete with treasure map)… but it’s mostly done. Last night he got to sleep in his boat bed. He said the Krakin will eat any monsters that might be around… so he’s not scared.

Here are some more pics

Fixin’ things
Sep 9th, 2008 by Bell

Well.. we’ve decided to try and sell the house. For lots of reasons…not important right now. There is no urgency, there are no demands being put on us (other than the pressure of getting it ready to list- but we imposed that on ourselves).

We’ve been working on odd jobs. Cleaning up the yard, mulching, scraping peeling paint off the ceiling and repainting…repairing the door jams in the kitchen where we had to remove them to get our new, awesome fridge into the kitchen, and… we took the wallpaper out of the kitchen and painted the walls.

See?

Wish I had done it years ago… I think I love it.
